What is an Income Tax Return?
An Income Tax Return is a prescribed return through which a taxpayer reports relevant income, deductions, taxes paid and other required information to the Income Tax Department.
Why is ITR Filing Important?
Filing an ITR creates an official record of the income and tax information reported by the taxpayer. Depending on the taxpayer's circumstances, filing may be mandatory or may be useful for claiming a refund, carrying forward eligible losses, obtaining financial documentation, or complying with specific statutory requirements.
The correct ITR form depends on factors such as residential status, taxpayer category, income sources, business or professional income, capital gains and other applicable conditions.
Who Can Apply / File an Income Tax Return?
Different taxpayers may have different filing obligations. The applicable provisions should be checked for the relevant assessment year or tax year.
Individuals
Salaried employees, pensioners, freelancers, investors and individuals earning income from different sources may need to file an ITR.
HUF
Hindu Undivided Families may have separate income and tax filing requirements subject to the applicable provisions.
Business & Professionals
Proprietors, professionals, partners and other eligible persons may have business or professional income requiring an appropriate return.
Companies
Companies generally have separate income-tax return requirements, including applicable financial and statutory information.

Common ITR Filing Mistakes
Wrong ITR Form
Example: Using an ITR form meant for specified income categories even though the taxpayer has business or professional income requiring another form.
Ignoring AIS
Example: Bank interest or another reported transaction appears in AIS but is not considered while preparing the return.
TDS Mismatch
Example: Claiming TDS without checking whether the relevant tax credit is reflected correctly in the available tax statement.
Incorrect Bank Details
Example: Providing an incorrect or unvalidated bank account can create difficulties where refund processing is involved.
Missing Capital Gains
Example: Shares or mutual funds sold during the year are omitted from the return.
Forgetting e-Verification
Submitting the return and completing the required verification are separate steps. Always check the return status after submission.
