TDS Compliance Made Simple
Understand Tax Deducted at Source, TAN, TDS applicability, deduction and payment, quarterly statements, certificates, important forms, compliance timelines and common TDS mistakes.
What is TDS?
TDS means Tax Deducted at Source. It is a mechanism through which tax is deducted from specified payments at the applicable time and deposited with the Central Government.
Tax Deducted at Source
Under the TDS mechanism, the person responsible for making certain specified payments may be required to deduct tax at source at the applicable rate and deposit the amount to the Government within the prescribed timeline.
TDS can apply to payments such as salary, interest, commission, professional fees, rent, contractor payments and other specified payments, depending on the applicable law and conditions.
The deductor must generally maintain appropriate records, deposit deducted tax, file applicable TDS statements and issue prescribed TDS certificates.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
TDS compliance generally applies to the person who is legally responsible for making a specified payment and deducting tax where the applicable conditions are met.
Companies
Companies making payments covered by TDS provisions may have deductor responsibilities.
Firms & LLPs
Partnerships and LLPs may need to deduct and report TDS on applicable payments.
Employers
Employers are responsible for applicable TDS on salary payments.
Certain Individuals / HUFs
Individuals and HUFs can also have TDS obligations for specified transactions where the statutory conditions are satisfied.
Government Bodies
Government deductors may have specific TDS deduction and reporting responsibilities.
Other Deductors
Any person falling within a TDS provision must comply with the applicable deduction requirements.
Who Needs TDS Compliance?
Employer Payments
TDS may apply to salary payments based on the employee's taxable income and applicable provisions.
Professional Fees
Certain professional and technical payments can attract TDS under the applicable provisions.
Contractor Payments
Specified payments to contractors may attract TDS when statutory conditions are met.
Rent Payments
Specified rent payments can be subject to TDS under applicable provisions.
Commission / Brokerage
Specified commission or brokerage payments can attract TDS.
Interest Payments

Specified Property Transactions
Certain property-related payments can involve TDS / challan-cum-statement requirements.
Other Specified Payments
Other categories may be covered depending on the applicable TDS provision.
When Should a Business Register for TDS?
TDS compliance is not based on a GST-style registration threshold. Where TAN is required, the deductor should obtain TAN and comply with the applicable TDS provisions.
TDS Applicability
First determine whether the proposed payment falls within a provision requiring tax deduction.
TAN Requirement
A person required to deduct or collect tax must obtain TAN where the law requires it, subject to specified exceptions.
Start Compliance
After the applicable registration/TAN process, establish a system for deduction, payment, statements and certificates.

The 1961 Act contains the traditional TDS framework and continues to govern relevant earlier tax years and transactions under the transitional provisions.
Income-tax Act, 2025
From 1 April 2026, the Income-tax Act, 2025 provides the new legislative framework for tax years beginning on or after that date.
Income-tax Rules
Rules prescribe practical procedures including payment, statements, certificates, forms and compliance timelines.
Notifications & Circulars
Government notifications, CBDT circulars and instructions provide operational guidance and updates.
