Understanding ITR

What is an Income Tax Return?

An Income Tax Return is a prescribed return through which a taxpayer reports relevant income, deductions, taxes paid and other required information to the Income Tax Department.

Why is ITR Filing Important?

Filing an ITR creates an official record of the income and tax information reported by the taxpayer. Depending on the taxpayer's circumstances, filing may be mandatory or may be useful for claiming a refund, carrying forward eligible losses, obtaining financial documentation, or complying with specific statutory requirements.

The correct ITR form depends on factors such as residential status, taxpayer category, income sources, business or professional income, capital gains and other applicable conditions.

Important 2026 Transition

Income-tax Act, 1961 & Income-tax Act, 2025

The transition does not mean taxpayers simply choose between two Acts. The applicable law depends on the relevant tax period and the nature of the proceeding.

Income-tax Act, 1961

The 1961 Act governs tax years beginning before 1 April 2026 and related proceedings that continue under the earlier framework.

  • FY 2025-26 income
  • AY 2026-27 return
  • Earlier assessment years
  • Earlier-year assessments and proceedings
→

Income-tax Act, 2025

The new Act applies to Tax Years beginning on or after 1 April 2026, subject to the applicable transitional provisions.

  • Tax Year 2026-27 onward
  • New tax-year framework
  • New Act forms and compliance framework
  • New Act tax payments from applicable period
Important: Income earned during FY 2025-26 is reported as AY 2026-27 and continues to be governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961. Tax Year 2026-27 relates to income beginning from 1 April 2026 and follows the new Act framework.
